Semana 48: Naked Homeless Dude and Transfers
About 3 months ago, my old companion, Elder Viedas, and I spotted this naked, homeless man in the city center being chased by police officers being as he was causing a disruption. Now, he has made his trek over to our area and I swear that he has super powers. It feels like every time I look behind me, he is there sitting up against a wall eating food from a trash bag. I am not joking when I say that I've seen him probably 50 times this week alone.
We did a lot of fun service activities this week! The member that we live with has another house just down the street and we went over there as a zone and cleaned their entire backyard that was filled with trash, shrubs, and unnecessary junk. We even chopped down some banana trees with machetes and now we have a ridiculous amount of bananas wooooo!
I have no idea what on earth happened but people were sending a ton of rumors about transfers throughout the week and the entire mission was soooo anxious. I thought I had already figured out my transfers before Sunday... until the Assistants started sending out transfer calls and everything turned out to be fake. The mission was freaking out and it was probably the craziest transfer call I've ever witnessed. Welcome to Mexico, the land of the gossip.
Speaking of transfers, my prayers were answered!! I AM LEAVING PETROMEX!!!! I am going to the Macuiltepetl Zone in Xalapa as a zone leader! The zone had major issues last transfer so my new comp and I are whitewashing. I'm high key very hyped for this transfer because my companion is the most experienced zone leader we've got and all the missionaries coming into the zone are phenomenal! Also I am way excited to escape the heat and finally go back to the chilly, rainy Xalapa weather! Big W!!
Yesterday, we were teaching a lesson to an inactive member that we are trying to reactivate. She was recounting all of her life experiences to us and talking about how her and her spouse are on the verge of getting divorced. It was heartbreaking seeing her bawling her eyes out and I was on the verge of tears as well. Suddenly, her little 4 year old son came around the corner in a baggy, white button up shirt, tiny slacks, and a tie and shouted "I'm ready for church!" Church already happened 2 hours before but I couldn't help but smile and laugh. Then out of nowhere, he started running towards me, leaped into my arms and said "I love you, I want to be just like you". Now at this point I was crying hahahaha! He then went over to his mom and gave her a paper heart that he cut out. I think it's safe to say that it made her day. But that moment made my mission. It made me realize how important this work truly is. It's so important that a little innocent 4 year old can understand.
To all the missionaries on this email list and all of you in general, I hope you know that people look up to you. Children look up to you. Even though it may not seem like anyone cares about what you are doing, trust me, they do. I am so grateful to be a missionary and for the chance I've had to really see the Atonement work in the lives of others, as well as mine. It's crazy that today is my 11 months, it feels like yesterday when I was in my training in New York. The time passes by ridiculously fast.
I love you all,
Elder Scown
