Semana 62: Day of the Drunks
Just so you are prepared, this email is going to be filled with interactions that I had with drunk men in my new area.
Sorry for not sending y'all an email last week! I know you were all looking forward to it... lol psych!
Well I got transferred to my new area and I've been here for a week and a half now. Transfers happened on Tuesday but I didn't even get to my area until Thursday because I had to stay back for Mission Leadership Council on Wednesday. We learned a lot about what was going to happen this upcoming transfer with the Zone Leaders now separated in 2 different areas. Later in the afternoon, we all hopped on our bus and went to Papantla. We arrived at 9:30pm and there were not any taxis available to get me to my area so I spent the night in Papantla. Thursday morning my companion and I woke up and we went over to our area. It is about 40 minutes away from Papantla.
Elder Armendariz
There is absolutely nothing in Agua Dulce. It is a small town of 8,000 people and our area consists of 2 branches. There are no cities, just small towns everywhere. Agua Dulce is the biggest town. Our area takes up 1/6 of the entire mission. Most people in these small towns work in the field as laborers. They pluck limes, oranges, and bananas all day long and make barely any money. So that's why everyone drinks their life away over here. Pretty sad.
Lecciones con las familias
My companion, Elder Armendariz, is an absolute stud. He just finished his training and he considers me his godfather because he had a rough first 12 weeks in the mission field. He speaks fluent English and is from Chihuahua. I always talk to him in Spanish and he responds in English. We both correct each other and it's great.
Life
A man on the street told me... "There are two types of crazy people in this town, the drunks and the missionaries. They both talk to everyone, yell from across the street just to draw attention to themselves, and you can't understand what they are talking about. The only difference is that the drunks claim that they've seen God and missionaries claim that a 14 year old boy saw God.
I can't even argue with that statement.
Tarantula
Like I said last email, my companion almost got killed by a guy with a machete in Espinal. Our mission President closed the area. The second I got to Agua Dulce, I immediately called him and convinced him to open it up again. Now we go twice a week and it's great.

Interactions with Drunk dudes:
- We were teaching a family and the drunk husband came out and threatened "to chop me like chicken cubes." I told him that I was sorry and we were going to leave, he told me no and demanded that I taught his wife and kids because they need Jesus in their lives and we were good men.
-A drunk dude somehow passed through the gate and was walking around the church property
-A drunk dude invited himself to church on the street but never came
-A group of drunk dudes got in an argument with us and told us we were not men of God because we weren't willing to give them 100 pesos. They told us they would follow us and join our church if we did.
-A drunk dude from the street showed up to a lesson we were having with a lady outside of her house. He was 3 swigs away from blackout drunk. He couldn't stand on his own two feet. He leaned way too close to my face, fell forward on top of me and we almost kissed. I told him to go away but he wouldn't. I told my companion to start the lesson while I grabbed the drunk dudes hand and walked him across the street to his house. I sat him on his bed and ran back to the house to assist in the lesson. We were in the middle of the prayer when I felt a fist, gently graze past my head. It was the same drunk dude. Apparently he tried to punch me but he was so wasted that his body was moving .001 times the normal speed. He looked at me and said "You lack respect *bad word*" and then gave me the silent treatment. Which I was totally fine with because now I could participate in the lesson. We taught the entire lesson with the drunk dude sitting right next to me.
-Some drunk dudes were walking down the street with machetes shouting for my companion and I. The idiot teenager we are teaching shouted that we were over where he was as a joke. They came, I was ready to fight, but they just dabbed me up and gave me a hug. Drunk people are so nice.
-A mob of drunk dudes showed up on their motorcycles, knocked over my bike and caused a scene with the family we were teaching and we were forced to finish the lesson early.
-and like 10 more incidents.
Pan
We have bikes in our area which is dope. The heat isn't as bad as I remember. The entire town hates our Branch Presidents family so it makes missionary work really difficult once they find out what church we go to.
La vista
I think that's about it for this week. This Wednesday, Elder Montoya from the México Area Presidency (he's in charge of every mission and stake in all of México) is coming to Poza Rica for a zone conference. He asked for a companionship of missionaries to film themselves teaching real investigators. He is going to watch it, sit down with us one on one and have an interview about how that lesson went. My Mission President picked my companion and I to do it. We actually put our investigator on date the lesson we filmed. Hopefully I don't get chastised by a general authority lol! Wish me luck!
